The 26" wheeled, caliper braked Raleigh Superbe Sports Tourist was the best transportation bicycle in the world and was produced in more or less the same form from the 1930s to the 1980s. It had everything you need (and nothing you don't) fitted as standard and was built to last for ever with minimal maintenance.

Unlike the stately DL-1 the sports tourist models were built for speed as well as comfort. They were the Jaguar of bicycles, to use a motoring analogy.

This is the bike which could get the masses cycling if only it was readily available (along with the segregated infrastructure). Your current stem is very short, by the look of it probably 60mm or less, so you have a lot of room to move. 100 or 120mm stems are not uncommon. You just have to trade off against the lengthened reach, which might start to be too far. One ay around this is to find a handlebar with less drop. bNanseikanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17776967115069837945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2950281679163772560.post-57414380868778332992012-05-15T08:37:49.656-07:002012-05-15T08:37:49.656-07:00Good points, Malachi. You're completely right about my off-base expectations -- which were mostly in jest, but still. I suppose I thought I'd see more bikes left over from the 70s and 80s, which you do in the States. One commenter from England reminded me that your weather probably does claim more vintage frames as victims than ours. Could be, I suppose. Maybe what's odd isn't the lack of 40-year-old bikes in Ireland, but the prevalence of them in California.

As for the Antrim Coast, before I return, I'll impose on you for a point in the direction of the flat bits. And yes, the whole time I was in Katesbridge and the like in Down all I could think of was how perfect it would be for cycling.

Next time! However you would see hundreds of commuter cyclists in belfast, most of them on little hybrid bikes with big tyres that would be unsuitable for touring. You would also see a lot of leisure cyclists on the greenways and towpaths and along the flat section of the Antrim Coast, between Larne and Cushendun. But why would you expect us to be out on antique bikes dressed in tweeds?
many employees here get bicycles half price through tax releif to encourage them to cycle to work so there have been a huge growth in this in the city.Adminhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05199966355165414581noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2950281679163772560.post-31124566740297767882012-04-05T05:25:29.155-07:002012-04-05T05:25:29.155-07:00It really is a lovely bike. Sadly, many bikes have fallen foul of our damp weather, but many more have been pulled from barns and placed on ebay. I've just added to my collection with another full chaincase Sports, A ladies Dawn Tourist, and a 'His and Hers' pair of 28" wheel Raleigh Tourists from the mid 30s. £120 for the four! An oily rag and some oxalic acid for the rust... should come up a treat.

I'm loving the enthusiasm you guys are putting back into vintage 3-speeds in the US. I was going to flip it but took a liking to it.The dates on hubs indicate 1985 production. Being an english 3 speed fan I made several modifications to mine. I installed alloy Northroad bars, modified fenders and chainguard from a Raleigh Sports to fit and painted them silver with white tail and S/A reflector on rear fender. Brooks B66 and Pletsher Rack. I wanted the vintage look. Use it for rides at NJ shore. I did about 250 miles last year looking forward to this season. This is one of several bikes I own. The welds were horrible and the rear coaster brake hub failed in less than 2 weeks.
