Sandwich stop

I liked the look of this colorful wall and the contrast with the oldest of my bikes.

They make a pretty good reuben sandwich too.

  1. Looks great! I love the full chaincases! Do you know of any Ladies superbe or DL-1s for sale? I am in Chico and can't seem to find any anywhere.

  2. Thanks, Tanya. I've come across a ton of ladies' Sports (and similar models) on C-list, but relatively few Superbes. Of course, they're nearly the same bike. The typical three-speed on CL, though, is from the 1970s, I find. They were down to just a chain guard by then, not the full case. I'll keep my eyes open and message you any good ones I find. BTW, Chico rocks.

  3. That is a beautiful bike. The 26" wheeled, caliper braked Raleigh Superbe Sports Tourist was the best transportation bicycle in the world and was produced in more or less the same form from the 1930s to the 1980s. It had everything you need (and nothing you don't) fitted as standard and was built to last for ever with minimal maintenance.

Unlike the stately DL-1 the sports tourist models were built for speed as well as comfort. They were the Jaguar of bicycles, to use a motoring analogy.

This is the bike which could get the masses cycling if only it was readily available (along with the segregated infrastructure). Bring back the Sports Tourist!
